Moissanite / Lab Grown Diamond / Doctor Diamond FAQs

Find answers to the most common questions below.

Moissanite is the most brilliant jewel in the world. It has more brilliance, fire and lustre than any other gemstone.Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral, silicon carbide, that is found in limited quantities in the earth. While moissanite exists in nature, it is so incredibly rare that it must be created in a lab to produce pieces large enough to cut into gemstones. When cut and faceted, moissanite is by definition, the world’s most brilliant gem.

Moissanite is created through a thermal growing process using the natural mineral Silicon Carbide. Moissanite is then hand cut to maximise its brilliance and fire.Moissanite is a rare, naturally occurring mineral also known as silicon carbide. It was first discovered by the Nobel Prize-winning chemist Dr. Henri Moissan at the site of a massive meteorite strike in Arizona. This intriguing new stone was named “moissanite” in his honor.

Moissanite was named in honour of its discoverer, French Nobel Prize-winner, Dr. Henri Moissan. In the late 90’s, scientists developed the innovative thermal growing process that creates silicon carbide crystals in a lab. These crystals are cut and faceted into moissanite gemstones and they rival any natural gemstone in fire and brilliance.

In terms of toughness, moissanite ranks second on the Mohs hardness scale just behind diamond in hardness and scratch resistance. Moissanite’s durability makes it an ideal gem for daily wear and ensures it will last a lifetime

While it looks like diamond, Moissanite is a different jewel than diamond with a different chemical composition. As such, Moissanite is not graded using the diamond grading system.Moissanite brilliance refers to its sparkle! The chemical structure of moissanite allows it to slow down, bend, and redirect light better than any other gemstone. This incredible sparkle measures between 2.65 and 2.69 on the refractive index, making moissanite the world’s most brilliant gem.

Moissanite’s properties and master cutting creates high dispersion (“fire”). Moissanite's dispersion is 0.104, which means it has more fire than diamond at 0.044. Fire is one of the three attributes that make up the beauty of a jewel, along with brilliance and lustre.Moissanite gems are known for their fire or dispersion, which is defined as a gemstone’s ability to split light to create a rainbow-like effect. Moissanite has more fire than any other gemstone - including diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald!

While Moissanite and diamond jewellery is extremely hard, durable and resistant to abrasion and chipping, like all other gemstones, they are not indestructible. Care for your Moissanite jewellery just as you would other fine jewellery, taking precautions not to wear rings and bracelets when doing rough work.

Moissanite is an incredible gemstone that costs a fraction of what a mined diamond costs. Though more affordable, the quality of moissanite production influences its price. Our process starts in a high-tech lab and once the moissanite is grown, it’s then hand cut and faceted by our experts (using patented technology) to ensure only the highest quality gems are produced.

Moissanite is a unique gemstone with its own chemical, physical and optical properties. While it is often compared to a diamond, moissanite has distinct characteristics that make it very different. Moissanite has more fire and brilliance than a diamond at a fraction of the cost. The quality and value of moissanite is often better than that of mined diamonds.

Yes! Moissanite is the perfect jewel for engagement rings. Due to Moissanite’s beauty, durability, value and brilliance that will last forever, it is very popular for engagement rings.

To the naked eye, the most visible differences between moissanite and diamonds are the fire and sparkle. Moissanite has more fire than a diamond and reflects a rainbow of colors when light passes through the gemstone. Moissanite is also more brilliant than a diamond, meaning it has more sparkle!

Moissanite is not colour graded like diamonds, even though it looks like a diamond. SUPERNOVA colour is colourless. It is white and bright without any hint of a blue tone like some other Moissanite gemstones in the market. This blue fluorescent tone, more visible in sunlight, makes the stone appears "whiter" but it does not look natural. Consumers prefer colourless SUPERNOVA Moissanite simply because it looks natural, bright and brilliant.

‘Doctor Diamond’ is the premium destination to buy moissanite gems and jewelry. The silicon carbide material used to make Doctor Diamond is manufactured through a patented process that results in unparalleled clarity compared to other moissanite on the market today. As the original creators of moissanite, ‘Doctor Diamond’ has more than 5 years of experience cutting and polishing its gems. It’s through progressive technology and relentless innovation that ‘Doctor Diamond’ created its proprietary specifications to maximize the fire and brilliance of these exceptional gemstones.

Moissanite grading uses a color grading scale that is based upon the GIA diamond color grading scale. There are three grades of moissanite available today: colorless (D-E-F range), near-colorless (G-H range) and with faint hues of color (J-K range).

Moissanite offers unmatched brilliance and fire at a fraction of the cost of diamonds. Moissanite’s durability makes it an ideal gem for daily wear and ensures it will last a lifetime. So is Moissanite worth it? The answer is a resounding yes.

No. The only warranty on Moissanite available in the market is a limited warranty against the loss of brilliance and fire for the lifetime of the owner. Any Moissanite, including SUPERNOVA will never lose its brilliance or fire as it has been proven over 20 years. We feel a warranty is redundant and therefore have decided to just give a Certificate of Authenticity with every SUPERNOVA purchase that is 5.0mm or 0.50ct and above.

You can care for and clean your SUPERNOVA jewellery the same way you would a diamond: Clean each piece separately (to avoid scratches with other stones) in a small bowl filled with lukewarm water and detergent or mild soap. Gently brush your SUPERNOVA Moissanite with a soft toothbrush and then rinse in warm running water. Finally, pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. You can also use an ultrasonic cleaner or a commercial jewellery cleaner.

Moissanite and Lab-Grown Diamonds are not the same. Moissanite is a unique gemstone with its own chemical, physical and optical properties.

Naturally occurring moissanite is rare - originally discovered inside of a meteorite crater by Henri Moissan. Modern methods for growing crystals create gems that are chemically, physically and optically identical to naturally occurring moissanite.

The quality of any gemstone, including moissanite, is based on its cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Gems are cut in such a way as to bring out their full beauty. Higher quality moissanite gems are cut to maximize fire and brilliance. A gem's quality is also determined by how clear and how flawless it is.

Moissanite is an extremely hard gem that commonly measures 9.25 - 9.5 on the Mohs scale. Because of its superior durability, Moissanite is suitable for everyday wear and can last as long as a diamond.

Yes. Resetting your moissanite gemstone(s) into a new piece of jewellery can be done by an experienced jeweller. Jewellery designers and manufacturers create their jewellery collections featuring ‘Doctor Diamonds’ created moissanite using techniques very similar to those practiced by bench jewellers.

While traditionally engagement rings have been worn by women, there is a growing trend of men wearing engagement rings as well. This choice depends on personal preference, cultural practices, and individual couple's decisions. And, of course once married, men will often opt for a Moissanite wedding band, too!
